Moving Into a Dorm and Making it Yours

!9#: Moving Into a Dorm and Making it Yours

Moving into a dorm can be a person's first try at independence. For some, the freedom alone is enough to warrant the move, while for others necessity requires it. Either way, any dorm should feel as personable and homely as possible. No one likes to live in cramped, dirty and unorganized spaces (though some do tolerate it, admittedly). Here are a few ways to make the most of moving into a dorm that can make college life easier and more fun in the long run.

Get help and advice

Universities that run campus-organized dorms usually send out orientation packages that explain the essential steps a student should take when moving in. Some universities even offer compensation for moving from a distant town to attend their institution. If the university is in a different country, instructions on how to obtain the right visas and residence permits, as well as laws on whether or not you can work in the respective country should be contained in their manual. If in doubt, always ask. Don't show up and find yourself facing unexpected expenses or legal obligations.

In addition to the university's orientation package, often a student association or union will offer their own help to new students. These are usually well-structured and professional non-profit organizations established apart from the university framework, though they operate within it, and are experienced at giving a helping hand to students. Clubs that are registered with these organizations may also hold move-in events during the early days of the semester as a way to make new contacts and encourage students to join in their pursuits. If you haven't received a flyer or package from your student union in the mail, be sure to look them up online, and see what kind of move-in help is available. This is also a great way to make new friends and get involved in university life right at the start.

When you arrive

Hopefully by now you've received instruction from the university as to what dorm you've been assigned (or granted) and how you should obtain entry to your room. Different dorms on the same university can have totally different operating systems. Some are literally room-only suites with shared bathroom and kitchen facilities, while others are apartment-like but come with personal locks on each bedroom. Some require you to eat at a designated cafeteria at certain times, while others allow you the freedom of making your own meals by offering cooking appliances. Knowing these things in advance will help you pack. Don't bring pots and pans if you'll be eating at a cafeteria. On the other hand, do bring your utensils and dish rags if you have an in-suite kitchen so you won't spend time (and money) trying to get set up at the beginning of the year when many other things are flying around like a tornado.

You might find that the dorm hasn't been cleaned. Check for dust, oily appliances, mold and any infestations before you bring you things inside. You want to have as little as possible in the way while you prep the place and you certainly don't want to contaminate your personal property with cockroaches or ants from the dorm. Be sure to report any unsuitable findings to the department in charge of dorm maintenance. They might be willing to do a lot of the work for you.

Ask if you can paint! This will not only give the place a clean, smooth look, it can also brighten your day to know your home is your favourite colour! Keep in mind your colour decorating scheme when choosing paint (refer to the section on 'Decorating' below).

Arranging the furniture and creating new space.

Now for the fun part. This is where space management comes in. Begin by moving the larger items first. Find out in advance what furniture is already provided. If you've got a bed and a desk already, see if you can adjust the arrangement of the room so that they are as much to the sides as possible. If possible, use the bottom half of your closet for your dresser. Most clothes that get hung don't reach that far down anyway. This way you'll have a larger open area in the centre of the room which will make the place feel more 'roomy'. If you're sharing a room and want to create privacy around your bed, consider putting a bookshelf or dresser around it. Otherwise, hang curtains up to separate that space. Move the smaller things in next. This is where you might find that your dorm is a lot smaller than you imagined! Fear not, there are lots of ways to not only save room but to 'create' space. Use up as much wall space as you can. Install shelves above door frames, desks, tables, the bed, and so on. Use large plastic boxes with lids as faux drawers underneath your bed. If you have a table, using stylish fold-up chairs can save space for when you need the extra room. Fold up chairs can be tucked away in a closet or even hung up beside the table by mounting special hooks to the wall. For the little things, buy drawer organizers or use empty shoe boxes for organizing. The backs of doors can also be used either by mounting hooks for holding coats or by attaching a shoe hanger.

Decorating

This is where creativity and style comes in. Decide which colour scheme you'd like to go with and start with that. It's not to say you can't use other colours in the future, but you want to have a theme for your dorm to give it an organized, well-thought out feel. You also don't have to be very restrictive in this sense. For example, your colour scheme could be 'fall colours', in which case you could use Mauve, brown, dark orange, burgundy and a little splash of yellow. You could use different pastels to go brighter or deep luscious colours combined with animal prints to be more daring. For ideas, search out decorating Web sites, consult an IKEA catalogue or, better yet, visit a furniture show room nearby!

Once you've got a colour scheme, you can begin picking out your blankets, curtains and wall hangings. Baskets are always neutral and can be used as trash containers or laundry hampers, even as pull out organizers on the high shelves you've just installed. Be sure not to use the same tone for everything. Keep a lighter colour, even white if it has to be, in your colour scheme. Making things too dark could get depressing, while making things too bright can make it hard to relax. Often lamps can be found second hand, and you're bigger investment will be finding lampshades. You can also decorate your own lampshades. Lots of lamps will help control lighting for different moods. Get some cheap photo frames from a dollar or discount store and develop photos of your friends, family and loved ones. You can take this a step further and create a calendar of your personal shots using Excel or some other calendar maker. Usually print shops and photo booths offer such services. The fond memories will help ease the strange feeling of being in a new place. Be sure to also find a photo of scenery that either gives off a surge of relaxation (say, palm trees on an empty beach) or triggers your imagination (perhaps a close up of a bumble bee pollinating a flower).

What Size Drill Bit For Cabinet Knobs

!9#: What Size Drill Bit For Cabinet Knobs

If you've decided to refinish your kitchen then you're probably sick of looking around for new hardware, what finish to put on the cabinet face etcetera. One thing you do need to know though is what size drill bit to use for cabinet knobs. The last thing you want to do with those new cabinet doors is to damage them. There are just a few tricks you need to do the job right without risking the cabinet finish.

First a brief primer on drawer handle pulls. Basically you have two types, knob and handle. They can attach in different methods.

A lot of handles will have two tiny screw holes built into the outer flange. These are the easiest to install.

For chunkier flush mount pulls and single knobs they attach with a bolt through the back of the cabinet and then are threaded into the hardware. You'll have to be much more careful when drilling the holes for this.

The first step of any job is prep work. You'll need a couple different sized drill bits, so picking up a drill index is a good idea. You won't need a full-blown index you can accomplish everything you need with a selection off bits ranging from ¼ to ½ inch.

Make sure the bits are sharp. The last thing you want is to risk the bit walking across the cabinet surface or splintering the wood.

For the screw in type handle the installation is really simple. Just mark where the screws are going. Tap in a pilot hole about a third of the way through the cabinet face and sink in the screws.

The bolt in handles will take a bit more time and prep work.

A single bolt knob is the next step up in complexity. For this you'll need to measure from the rim of the knob to the center of the bolt hole. This will be your drill offset.

Place a piece of tape over the cabinet face where you'll be installing the knob. Now trace around the perimeter of the knob. Take your off set measurement to mark where the center of the bolt hole is.

Use the ¼ inch drill bit to zip in a pilot hole. Be sure to drill from front to back, I know it's counter intuitive, but this way if you do have any splintering it will be on the inside of the cabinet.

Now just move up drill bit sizes until you get to a size just large enough to sink the bolt through the door.

Remove the tape, shoot home the bolt and tighten the knob to it.

The most complex door pull will have two bolts. The basic principal is the same.

Apply tape
Measure the offset
Trace the handle.
Mark the tape.

Drill the pilot hole then move up in size until you reach bolt size.

The only difference in attachment is you'll be tightening the bolt from the back of the cabinet.

So what size drill bit to use for cabinet knobs is a bit of a misnomer. You'll need quite a few different sizes to achieve a sleek professional look.

How to Have a Cool & Organized Dorm Room on a Budget!

!9# How to Have a Cool & Organized Dorm Room on a Budget!

Tip #1 - In any small space your best asset is usually the walls. Adjustable vertical shelving units can do miracles for creating space and keeping your floor clean and clear.

There are some great affordable and esthetically pleasing options available in stores. Check out Ikea, Walmart, Target and the Elfa line at the container store. The Elfa line consists of durable, adjustable and great looking wall units that can easily be installed and taken down.

You can purchase fun colored boxes and other accessories to help keep your shelves clean and organized.

Tip #2 - Create defined areas, for example, a study space, a sleeping space, a sitting area, and an eating space. Make the most of each space. First make it functional then make it appealing.

Get creative, for example maybe a desktop can double as a study space and eating area. Put a chair or stool on both sides of it (so two people can sit and eat together). On one side have a pull out basket unit (that sits under the desktop) store all of your study supplies (pens, pencils, stapler, tape, ruler, calculator, etc.) and on the other side have a pull out basket unit that stores kitchen supplies (silverware, can opener, cloth napkins, etc.).

Mount a shelving unit on the wall above the desktop and stack dishes and cookware on one shelf and put your binders and reference materials on another shelf.

Tip #3 - Create a space you love. Add some fun or soothing color. A little paint can go a long way. Painting all of the walls, furniture and even the ceiling can make a huge difference in a small space. If you can't paint, use fabric and rugs. You can temporarily cover the fronts of armoires and dresser drawers with fabric as well as make cool window treatments and wall hangings. If you love your space you will be more likely to keep it clean and organized.

The Golden Rule: Create a place for everything so that everything can be in its place. For small spaces to be functional they need to stay clean and organized. If you have designated place for everything, it will be easy to keep your space picked up.

Peace Stealers - Clutter and Disorganization

!9# Peace Stealers - Clutter and Disorganization

There's a space between our hearts and our heads where life gets mixed up, jumbled and unmanageable. When we can live fully in the moment and be present in our lives it's amazing the gifts we get. When we live in the chatter in our heads; the shoulda, coulda, woulda, we miss the beauty of what is. Disorganization and clutter can steal our now. It feeds the chatter and creates un-manageability. Peace and serenity slip away.

Peace Stealer #1 - Getting out the door

Tips for getting out the door - STOP! The toughest part is creating new habits and breaking the crazy cycle of rushing. You can do it. Take time out now or take it when you are sick from stress or exhaustion. Choose now. Don't minimize the effects of stress on body & spirit. 15 minutes in the evening restores serenity in the morning.
- When the homework is done, put the backpacks by the door.
- When packing up backpacks, check for signatures needed and any other work due.
- Take 5 to pack lunches the night before, do this at dinner clean up so there's one clean up activity in the kitchen.
- Consider healthy breakfast bars for grab n go. Keeps you out of the drive thru and the ATM.
- Keep trail mix or healthy non perishable snacks in the car to avoid drive thru.

The alarm goes off and the dread creeps up from your stomach to shoulders to head as you become more conscious. You fell into bed late and have a full day ahead. The rush begins, skip the flossing, your hair dry's a natural and maybe the wrinkles in your clothes aren't that bad. Dole out the lunch money, your wallet now empty, feed the cat instead of yourself and run like a maniac gathering books, homework and Oh NO! "What do you mean it's due today?" Sound familiar?

Peace Stealer #2

Someone "helped" by bringing in the mail, some is on the table, some on the microwave. The pile is looming, the VISA is late AGAIN and the To File stack is now migrating to Canada. Wait, "Where's the insurance form," the passport, the school needs what certificate to register for kindergarten?

Tips for paper/mail management
- Establish one place for mail. Either the "helper" puts in there, and ONLY there, or leaves it in the mailbox.
- Establish bill pay dates 5th & 20th, 1st & 15th and schedule time with yourself to do this. (Trust me, it's less daunting when there's a plan)
- Go through the mail over the trash. Toss ads etc, open EVERYTHING. Toss all extra inserts, envelopes. Keep "only" what you need to pay or take action on.
- Use a small basket for envelopes, deposit envelopes, stamps and bills to keep it all together. Review the basket 1st & 15th.
- Simplify files so things can easily get where they belong - keep them out of Canada.

Peace Stealer #3 - Bedroom Clutter

Shoving stuff off the bed or high stepping over "God knows what" in the bedroom DOES NOT make for restful sleep or a serene start to the day. There's something so unsexy about mounds of laundry next to the bed or closet doors that won't close.

Tips for restful bedroom
- Go thru and purge the closet. We wear 20% of our clothing 80% of the time. If it's not seasonal and you haven't worn it in 6 months - let it go.
- Get rid of ill fitting, faded & worn clothes - your body deserves to look good and be comfortable.
- Do a load of laundry a day if it's overwhelming. 10 minutes to gather it and start the load - set a timer so you get it to the dryer on the same day.
- Consider IKEA hanging laundry baskets. One white, one black (whites/colors) they're inexpensive and "presort" the clothes!
- Consider a soft light for evening wind down time to get your mind & body ready for sleep.
- Give yourself the gift of reading or other relaxing activity before bed.

Any significant, "real" change requires slight persistent effort. Being organized takes daily attention but as your systems become the new habit you'll find it takes less effort to be organized than disorganized.

The payoff? Sanity, peace and a much slower pace. Your energy level will rise when your stuff no longer sucks the life out of you. You breathe better when you have room to move freely and your relationships improve when you slow down enough to see each other. Your spirit expands when you are in the moment, enjoying what is.

Decluttering Blueprint - Step 3 - Organizing Your Kitchen

!9# Decluttering Blueprint - Step 3 - Organizing Your Kitchen

If your kitchen isn't living up to your expectations, give it a makeover for convenience and pizazz using the steps below.
Take stock of your kitchens purpose. Is it for cooking, baking, eating, and storing food? If so, move all the items that are unrelated to the purpose of your space (such as papers, magazines, tools, etc.) to other, more appropriate rooms of your home. Identify the major categories of items to be kept in your kitchen. For example:
Cookware - skillets, saucepans, stew pots, and lids. Bakeware - cookie sheets, pie pans, cake pans, and muffin pans. Appliances - coffee maker, toaster, food processor, bread machine, and mixer. Kitchen tools - vegetable peeler, egg slicer, thermometer, cork screw, manual can opener, box grater, cutting board, rolling pin, strainer, and sifter. Utensils - spoons, forks, spatulas, tongs, whisks, pastry brush, and grilling utensils. Dinnerware, glassware and flatware - plates, bowls, cups, glasses and silverware. Pantry items - spices, herbs, dry goods (flour, noodles, etc.), canned and bottled items (soups, Worcestershire sauce, etc.), and vinegar and oils. Refrigerator and freezer items. Cook books. Under the sink items - waste basket and cleaning products.

Sort everything in your kitchen into the piles that represent the major categories identified in step #2. Start with all surface items, and then move to the objects stored in drawers, cabinets, and your pantry. If you have an extraordinary amount of items to sort, you might want to get a large box for each category so your piles don't get mixed up.
Weed out and organize each category. Be determined to eliminate everything but the items you love and use. Reduce multiples of any single item and dispose of old, seldom used and unwanted items by pitching them, giving them to someone else, selling, or donating them. Then put the remainder of items into sub categories, i.e. when organizing pantry items--put all spices together and all dry goods together, etc.
Decide where to store each category. Consider the size of each category, how frequently you will be accessing each category, and where in your kitchen you will be using each category. For example, put dinnerware close to your dishwasher and cookware close to your stove. Then, double check your plan - is there convenient and sufficient storage space available for each category?
Purchase containers, space saving fittings and accessories to make your kitchen as convenient and pleasing as possible. Many kitchens suffer from a shortage of space so using items such as the following will maximize your space and make it more functional.Pull out cabinet organizers make it easy to keep like things together and provide easy access to items in the back of your cupboard. (Available at many home improvement stores.) Steel expanding shelves double space in your shelf area. (Available at Bed, Bath and Beyond.) Wall rack systems free up counter space and make it easier to grab needed utensils when cooking. (Available at Stacks and Stacks, IKEA or home improvement stores.)

Put all items into their new container and/or space. And, enjoy your reward...a kitchen that functions well day in and day out!
